Canadian Western Championships

Swim Canada’s, Canadian Western Championships was held over April 12-15 at the Saanich Common Wealth Place in Victoria, BC. The swim meet was composed of 542 athletes, 71 swim teams of the 135 swim teams in Western Canada. The Parkland Pirates were represented by 2 qualified swimmers, Ryan Boll & Jewel Shewchuk, who both placed in the top 16, which allowed the Pirates to score. The Pirates finished the champions in 47th place over all—fourth highest among teams in the Edmonton Metro Area. Ryan Boll, who qualified in one event—the 50m Butterfly—gave strong best time performance in prelims, which rocketed him from a low seeded position into finals, where Ryan gave a faster performance of 26.74 seconds that allowed him to finish 15th over all.

Jewel Shewchuk qualified in two events—the 800m Freestyle and the 1500m Freestyle. In the 800m Freestyle Jewel was able to improve by 9.88 seconds to send her up the rankings from 59th to 23rd. Three days later Jewel raced in the 1500m freestyle where her time of 18:30.48 put her into scoring position with a twelfth place finish!
